There's obviously something about old Yankee trucks that gets the juices flowing amongst Biglorryblog's fabled 'pie winning' anorak army. And in the front rank with chest proudly extended is Richard Stanier who tells me: "I thought I'd add my two pennorth to the Oshkosh and Marmon feature on BLB.' To which yours truly replies in the words of the great Barry Norman...'And why not?' Richard goes on to say about the picture above: "I've attached a photo of a cab-over South African Oshkosh E 1423, powered by a CAT 1674 motor and operated by South African Railways and Harbours Administration in the 1970's.'
Richard has also supplied this scan of a brochure for the unusual Marmon cab-over and adds: "Marmon quite liked playing up to their 'small' status with tag lines such as: 'A rare breed' and 'Not the best known - Just the best' From the same brochure is a scan of the cab assembly (below). The text says "Nobody builds a cab the way we do at Marmon" - the unusual idea of rivetting aluminium sheets together in a field having apparently been overlooked by other manufacturers...!
Cheers, Richard.
And for all Oshkosh fans here's a heavy hauler still working in new Zealand from Rod Simmonds..
