September 2010 Show & Tell Report

We added a new member (Rob Sheffer) and welcomed back Danny Jayne and long-lost Jeff “sweet lips” McClain.  And Jeff has lost weight and looks fit and trim.  Stay away from my wife! ;-)
Mark Beck kicked things off with a review of his Hilgarian Battle Cruiser progress.  You may recall, this is a paper model.  Mark informed us that finding a good, strong, fast acting paper glue has been a challenge.  The good thing is, if you mess up, you can just print off another and start over.

Young but knowledgeable Sam Tardani showed us his good sized WWII diorama which pitted German Assault troops against British Commonwealth troops.  A lot of interesting detail and action.  Nice! Next is his Tamiya anti-aircraft gun (an M2 50 cal) and a Tamiya sniper and a bazooka crew.  Keep up the good work, Sam, and stay away from that Russian armor!  It’s bad for you!  ;-)

Ya gotta like Feller Dewitt.  He tells it like it is.  If he messes up, he tells us.  No secrets.  Here is his beautiful Monogram F4J Phantom in 1/48 scale.  The figures add to the interest.  Feller advised that the average age of a USN carrier deck crewman is 19 and it is rated the #1 most dangerous job on earth.  Thanks, Feller!

Dave Martin detailed what was taking place on his WWII diorama…and it wasn’t pretty!  ;-)  Both the Russian T-34 and the German Elephant 1/72 tanks have been knocked out of action but the Germans were suffering the worst…prompting Danny to proclaim, “The Germans are being used as wheel chocks”.  Ah, Dan.  A man of few words!  ;-)

Good to see Mr. Eric Gemzer again.  He brought in several great looking models and I think he was the only one who figured out my “joke”.  The kid may be smarter than he looks!  ;-)  First up is his Ford Flivver aircraft.  This interesting model is from a Williams Brothers 1/48 kit.  Next, is his very yellow funny car.  No…not that it looks funny, that’s the type of car it is!  Eric calls this a Sunoco Dodge Avenger Funny Car.  Can you believe he built it in ONE day and has over 70 decals?  Amazing!  Expect to see this at K-Zoo.

Small scale diorama connoisseur Mark Sang served up another tantalizing offering.  The building is from an Italeri checkpoint kit and the vehicles are a German SDKFZ 234-3 Puma and the other is an Italian AB41 Autoblinda.  Some of the troops are Italian Socialist Republic troops.  Neat stuff!

Well, well.  I guess new guy Rob Sheffer thinks he can just waltz into our meeting and plunk down four models and expect us to be impressed.  Rob…we are all seasoned and hardened modelers.  We’ve seen it all before.  And if you think…eh…who am I kidding…we were all blown away!  This guy is GOOD!  He even painted his Bireme to match the colors in the room where it is displayed!  ;-)  And can this guy can really make plastic look like wood.  I swear I smelled Teak!  Keep coming back, Rob, we want to see more!
First up is his Greek/Roman(?) Bireme, a French Man of War Sirene, and A10 and F51 aircraft.  Hope he’s not going to the K-Zoo contest!!  ;-)

Here we go again.  It’s Mr. Master Modeler himself.  This time he’s taken a MiniArt 1/16 ‘31 Ford Pickup and bashed it with a supercharged Hemi from a ’68 Vega funny car kit…and a ton of other modifications.  Note the really cool firewall.  Man, I hate this guy!!!  ;-)  Rob can make plastic look like wood.  Dan took real cherry wood and made it look like…eh…real cherry wood!

The Professor, Bill Leger, brought in his spectacular WWII diorama.  It’s even cooler than I remembered.  Check out the brick wall…hand-made by the Prof. himself.  Check out the realistic burned wood…done with black paint and thinner.  The tank is a Stalin 2 tank.  Don’t miss the water effects that Bill created.  Very, very nice.  Too bad the K-Zoo judges had their heads up the SR-71 tailpipes that day.

This is an AMT model of the1967 Red GTO four-speed that Bill purchased when he was on leave from active duty in Vietnam.  He loved that car!  And so do we!

Mr. Robert Thompson brought in his just competed WWI British armored car Pattern 1920 Mk. I based on the Rolls Royce Silver Ghost.  Bob reported that the kit was a bear and that Roden, the Ukrainian kit manufacturer, uses poor quality plastic.  That didn’t stop Bob from building a first rate model.  He used an acrylic sand color followed by an umber oil wash and the new Tamiya “make-up kit” weathering sticks.  He modified a German to be a British General and then scratchbuilt the camera.  Just great, Bob!

Chuck Stewart, AKA skill level 1.4, brought in the ancient Revell 1/77 Ford Tri-Motor.  This kit uses 54-year-old molds but it is still a pretty nice kit and goes together reasonably well.  This model is just a warm-up as he is going to build the 1/72 Airfix/MPC kit in the actual marking of the EAA aircraft.

Stan Gilchrist was back for more!  This time he brought in two adversaries…a German King Tiger, with the Porsche turret, in a winter paint scheme.  This was Stan’s first model!  Yikes…he hit the ground running!  The other is the ubiquitous Russian T-34 with bedspring armor and individual track links.  Great job, Stan!  Keep coming back!
Stan Tanks
Matt Carrier brought in three beautiful F-16’s.  The amazing thing for me was the awesome paint job…they were all hand painted!  And this guy wants to learn how to use an airbrush!  Why???  Matt says the secret to hand painting is to thin the paint down and apply multiple coats.  I’m impressed!  From front to back, we have a Polish, a Chilean, and a Netherlands fighter.

Here are some photos of the attendees…there were 25 total!  What a blast we have!
